This is the source for the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team coverage for the 2016-2017 season. Nolan Kowal and Rob Mahon are sports journalists who are covering the team all season long.
Nolan Kowal is a second-year Creative Communications student at Red River College. He is majoring in journalism.
Nolan is also the Editor-in-Chief of The Projector, which is the student newspaper at RRC. He also works once a week at 680 CJOB as an evening news anchor, and as an intern game reporter for the Winnipeg Jets.
Nolan is pursuing a career in sports broadcasting. This past summer, he worked as a board operator on radio broadcasts for both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Winnipeg Goldeyes. In addition to his work on radio broadcasts for UMFM, he has also worked on webcasts for Bison men’s hockey games. His dream is to work at a major sports TV network in Toronto.
When he’s not busy with work or school, you can find Nolan fishing at his parents’ cabin on Lake Winnipeg, playing ball hockey or tennis, or watching TSN.
Rob Mahon is a second-year Creative Communications student at Red River College. He is majoring in journalism.
Rob is also a longtime hockey nerd, play-by-play man, and writer. He has worked as a play-by-play man for Bison Sports covering men’s and women’s hockey since 2014. He has also done volunteer and freelance work for Red River Radio and 880 CKLQ.
Outside of the radio booth, Rob has worked as a writer for Fantasy Team Advice and The Hockey Writers. Most recently, he has interned with the Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A student of the game and a veteran of many press boxes, he occasionally leaves these boxes to use the gym, play hockey himself, eat, or sometimes even sleep. Then he goes right back to the press box.
